Third Scottish Ski Area Ends 2017-18 Ski Season

Third Scottish Ski Area Ends 2017-18 Ski Season

Published : 23-Apr-2018 07:01

Nevis Range ski area is the third of the five Highland Scottish ski areas to decide to end its ski season.

The resort close to Fort William and Britain's highest mountain Ben Nevis on Scotland's West Coast had previously said it intended to stay open until May 7th but said today that the rapid thaw of the past 10 days had taken its toll on snow cover.

"Due to the continued thaw snow sports at Nevis Range are now closed for the season! It's been an amazing season and we've all had an awesome time!" a ski area spokesperson said today.

Two other areas, Glenshee and The Lecht have already closed for the season so currently Cairngorm and Glencoe are the two Scottish ski areas still open, although Cairngorm says that its remaining terrain is limited, reporting temperatures of +2C, rain showers and poor visibility this morning,
"It's looking a bit grim up top at the moment but the visibility improves at Traverse level. There are still limited snow sports back to mid station," a ski area spokesperson said today.

Trade body Ski Scotland had earlier said they expected the season to continue in to May and it looks like it will do at Glencoe which still has good cover and almost all terrain open. They say their season will run to May 7th when they'll close in order to begin to install a new chairlift for next winter, not for lack of snow.
