The 2019 ski season in New Zealand has got fully underway today with Mt Hutt opening as planned, the first ski area in the country to fully open.
It's a great start to winter there with heavy snowfalls over the past week giving top to bottom coverage. The resort had every run open including 2.5km of new terrain created over the southern hemisphere's summer.
The ski season in New Zealand had kind of started last Saturday, June 1st, at Whakapapa, one of the country's biggest ski resort, Mt Ruapehu's ski areas, on the North Island.
The centre only opened its small 'Happy Valley' area however for beginners and snow fun, making use of its all-weather snowmaking system.
Cardrona on the South Island had aimed to open some terrain on the same day but at the time there was not enough snow cover. It had a beginner slopes open today and will open fully for the season tomorrow, Saturday 8th June, as will The Remarkables.
