Snow Forecast Summary - 10th December 2010

Published : 10-Dec-2010 05:41

Another interesting week for weather (and snow) watchers in Europe. Snow last weekend was followed by a substantial, but brief, rise in temperature early in the week - accompanied by heavy rain to quite high levels (up to 2000 metres). Although this wrecked the early snows at low altitude, the resultant thaw / freeze has provided a useful consolidation of the snow pack at mid levels.

The Pyrenees did less well this week, although further afield in Northern Europe conditions improved further and four ski areas are now open in Scotland.

In the last couple of days Alpine temperatures have once again fallen, dramatically in many places, with accompanying snow once again to the valley floor.

In North America, good conditions are widespread - with some of the biggest snowfalls to the East Coast.

European Weather and Snow Next Week

The coming week looks a little less eventful than of late - past the next 24 hours there will be less in the way of snow but it will remain cold.

The longer term outlook is encouraging; the second half of December in The Alps looks like being both cold and snowy but more on that next week.
