Valle Nevado, Chile, just extended their season into November!
The Southern Hemisphere ski season winds down, but Chile's Valle Nevado heads for a historic 8 November finish in the Andes. Meanwhile, Alpine glaciers reopen, although snowfall across the Alps remains below usual early-October levels.

Snowline Drops to 1600m In The Alps

Ski resorts across the Alps have been waking up this morning with the snow down to as low as 1600m altitudes.
Accumulations of up to 20cm have been reported over the past 48 hours. La Plagne is pictured above this morning.
It's especially good news for those glacier areas opening over the next 24 hours including Solden this morning and two more Austrian resorts, the Kitzsteinhorn above Kaprun and the Stubai near Innsbruck tomorrow. They'll join the five glaciers already open in Austria, Italy and Switzerland. French resorts aren't expected to start opening until the latter half of next month.

Third year of the Northern Snow Show Biggest Yet

[b]The Northern Snow Show returned to The Snow Centre Manchester on 03–04 October, bringing a weekend of skiing, snowboarding, equipment testing and winter sports activities to the North of England.
For its third year, the show was the biggest yet, with more than fifty snowsports and lifestyle brands on site and visitors able to test skis and snowboards on indoor snow slope.

Northern Hemisphere To Overtake Southern For Areas Open From This Weekend

The number of ski areas open in the northern hemisphere is set to overtake the number still operating in the southern hemisphere this weekend, as more glacier centres open in the Alps whilst further resorts end their 2026 seasons in the Andes and New Zealand.

October 2026 brings season extensions in the Andes and New Zealand for the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northern, a handful of Austrian, Italian and Scandinavian ski areas are open, while North America waits amid hopes that a 'Super El Niño' will boost the coming season.

26-27 Ski Season Underway in Finland

Finland's ski season began this morning with Levi and Ruka both opening on stored snow preserved since last winter. Both centres plan to keep going now for more than 200 days/7 months through to May 2027, among the longest seasons in the world.

Pitztal Glacier, the latest to open in Austria for this winter

Ski Show On Snow In Manchester This Weekend

The Northern Snow Show returns to The Snow Centre Manchester this weekend, running Saturday and Sunday, 3–4 October, and once again stands as the UK's only consumer snowsports show held on real snow. The organisers are saying that this year's edition is set to be the biggest yet, blending snowsports brands, live demos, coaching sessions, talks and entertainment into a full two‑day celebration of winter culture.
