Aspen Snowmass Spends on Dining

The Aspen Skiing Company (ASC) which runs four ski areas around Aspen says it has been spending over $26 million [around £16.5 million] on on-mountain improvements ahead of the coming season.
It's the latest in a $164 million [£102 million] spend over the past eight years.

Ski Areas Open On East and West Coast USA

Killington Open Now
At least four more ski areas have opened in the US over the past 48 hours on both Atlasntic and pacific coasts.
On Friday Boreal became the first ski area in California too open for Winter 2011-12, joining Timberline in Oregon, Arapahoe Basin, Loveland and Wolf Creek in Colorado and the opened-but-closed again-since Las Vegas Ski resort in Nevada.

Northstar Gets Bigger

Northstar Resort (www.northstarattahoe.com) by Lake Tahoe in California has announced that it will expand the resort boundaries in two areas of the mountain, adding 170 acres of new side-country terrain to the resort's skiable acreage this winter. Guided side-country tours and snow cat accessed skiing and riding will also be offered for the first time to advanced skiers and riders who want to explore the resort's new terrain offering.

Snow Forecast Summary - 27th October 2011

The start of this week brought fresh snow to parts of the Eastern and Northern Alps, with temperatures briefly dipping as the snow fell. Localized accumulations of up to 30cm were reported. Fresh snows also blessed some of the North American ski areas.

Antoine was renowned not only for his daredevil base jumping stunts but also for being one of the best speed riding pilots in the world, winning many competitions and starring in numerous videos like this one shot earlier in Chamonix this year where he swoops down from the top of the Aiguille du Midi, riding the cable-car cables like a rail.

More Resorts Opening This Weekend

Laax
This Saturday, 29 October 2011, the winter season will kick off in Cervinia, Italy; Laax in Switzerland and Nakiska in Alberta, Canada.
The Cervinia opening was scheduled but the other two are earlier than expected and follow recent snowfalls.

Ski-Scotland All Area Season Pass On Sale

A season pass valid at all five Scottish ski areas is currently on sale, allowing skiers ad boarders to get around a common problem at Scottish ski areas – good conditions at several ski areas, less good or no skiing at the others.
"The All Area Season Pass has been really popular over the last couple of winters," said Chair of ski-scotland Heather Negus, "so we're delighted that the five mountain ski areas and SNO!zone, Scotland's other real snow ski area, have agreed to co-operate to offer the pass again."

Nassfeld Claims Lowest Priced Ski Service in The Alps

Nassfeld in Carinthia which has snuck in to a few UK tour operator brochures following heavy investment by the resort claims a number of unlikely 'best in Europe' titles.
Along with offering the fastest language courses in the continent in Carinthian German during a cable car ascent complete with certificate awards at the top, Nassfeld says its ski servicing in among the fastest and definitely the cheapest in the Alps.

Deer Valley ranked Number One (again) by Ski Magazine

Innsbruck to host its Third Olympics in 2012

The first ever Winter Youth Olympic Games will take place from 13th – 22nd January 2012 in Innsbruck and Seefeld (www.innsbruck2012.com).
It will be the third Olympics staged by Innsbruck, making it the first city in the world to host the Olympic Games on three occassions, having previously hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Games.

Resorts Opening On Both Sides of the Pond

Arapahoe Basin in Colorado, one of the world's 10 highest ski resorts, opened for the 2011-12 skio season today, just over three months since the last day of winter 2010-11 there in July.
The resort has won the annual battle to be "first in North America" which it usually wages against neighbouring Loveland, which plans to open tomorrow (October 14th).

Comedy Festival Goes It Alone In Mayrhofen

The Altitude Comedy Festival (www.altitudefestival.com) which ran for three years in Meribel before moving to Mayrhofen last spring as part of the Snowbombing event will go it alone this ski season.
Running from the 26th – 31st March 2012 and bringing with it some of the top names in comedy such as Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle and Al Murray, Altitude is the brainchild of commedian Marcus Brigstocke.

Rocking the Pistes of the Portes du Soleil

Les Gets - Ready To Rock
After its successful launch last winter, the series of music concerts in the Portes Du Soleil are back this March with a better name Rock the Pistes (it was previously the 'Festival des Concerts Sauvages).
Taking place from the 24th to 28th of March 2012 the idea is that the concerts are staged on the piste at locations around the vast Portes du Soleil area and guests who have registered up front receive texts telling them where the concerts will take place the day before the gig.

Engelberg Re-Opening

Engelberg was due to re-open today but is currently closed due to heavy snow – 15cm has fallen in the past 24 hours and temperatures are currently minus nine. It should open is soon as the bad weather passes, becoming a third Swiss snowsports option along side Saas Fee and Zermatt which have been open all summer.

Squaw - Not Quite This White Yet
Snow has been reported in the past 24 hours in both North America and northern Europe, including the peaks of the Scottish Highland hills and mountains.
Are, Scandinavia's leading resort reported a few centimetres of the white stuff, its first for 2011-12, yesterday.

New Quad And Hi Tec Ticket System For Mammoth

Mammoth Mountain is installing a new Doppelmayr high-speed quad chairlift to replace Chair 5, a fixed-grip triple. The new High-Five Express will whisk 2,400 people uphill per hour (600 more people per hour than the old chair) and will cut ride time in half. The new lift's terminals will be positioned to provide improved access.

Big 4-0 For Val Thorens

Europe's highest, and one of its youngest resorts, Val Thorens, is 40 years old this winter.
Back in 1971 an enthusiastic, pioneering team began the project of creating an all new resort at a staggering altitude of 2300 metres at the top of what was shortly to become the world's largest ski area, the 3 Valleys. Critics at the time argued "too high and too much snow!" But keen developers countered, "that gives us carte blanche to do as we please and overcome challenges!"
