Mammoth Base Tops 5m, Resorts Closed, After More Huge US Snowfalls

Mammoth Mountain in California reports that its upper slope base depth has reached 5m after more snow storms brought another 2m of snow to the resort, a similar amount to the snow that fell in the previous week.
It's the first ski area in the world to post a 5m+ base in the current ski season and it's the second winter in a row of big snowfalls in California following last winter's 'Godzilla El Nino' that came after four lean winters for snow covers during the state's drought.
The snow has caused some operational difficulties at ski resorts across Western North America with a number closing for several days due to issues including blocked roads, buried ski lifts and other infrastructure, avalanche danger and at times blizzard conditions.

The snow this week has been much heavier in Colorado too, with Crested Butte and Winter park reporting 1.7m (nearly 6 feet) and 2m (nearly 7 feet) of snowfall respectively.
Forecasters currently expect still more substantial snowfall in the area in the coming week.
