New £170m redevelopment project for Val d’Isère

Val d'Isère has announced one of the largest building projects seen in the French Alps over the past 20 years.Work on Le Coin de Val, a giant €200m (£170m) redevelopment of the heart of the village, will begin this autumn. The project is a partnership between Val d'Isère's Town Hall and local architect Jean-Charles Covarel.
The five-year project will see 900 extra guest beds created in two luxury hotels and two tourist residences, along with new chalets, shops, services and restaurants.
The redevelopment will cover 22,000 square metres and will see a range of 30-year-old buildings replaced. The area covered is bounded by the bus station roundabout, Dick's Tea Bar and a 250m stretch of the Avenue Olympique towards La Daille.
An underground moving walkway will connect with the main mountain access lifts and guests will be able to ski back to their accommodation.
The new buildings will be constructed in stone, slate and wood - the traditional mountain style of the Haute Tarentaise Valley. It will incorporate a guest arrival centre within an enclosed bus station, childcare facilities, and a concierge desk. 'La Tour de Val' on the Avenue Olympique will be the showpiece of the development, featuring a restaurant with panoramic views of the resort.
It will also see around 100 new private homes built in the centre of the resort. As 60% of Val d'Isère's clientele is English-speaking, interest is expected from potential British buyers, as well as other nationalities.
Respect for the environment has been considered in the design of Le Coin de Val, with smart systems designed to minimise energy consumption. Rainwater and snow melt will be used in the sanitation system and geothermal energy to heat the hotel rooms and apartments.
Certainly the resort has demonstrated a good snow record in challenging conditions in the last few seasons, thanks to a combination of Europe's largest artificial snowmaking facilities and a 300km ski area with the majority of slopes are above 2,000m.
The go-ahead for Le Coin de Val follows last year's redevelopment of the resort's Solaise ski area with a new high-speed gondola, surface lifts, beginner area, and an American-style mid-mountain day lodge.
