Ski area are opening over the next 24 hours in South America, Africa, Australia, Europe and North America.
In the southern hemisphere the 2017 ski season is really getting started after around 10 areas opened early over the past few weeks, in the northern hemisphere it's centres in Europe and North America re-opening for summer glacier skiing.
In fact ski areas are still open in Asia too, and of course there's snow in Antarctica, meaning we're beginning a three month period each year when it's possible to ski on every continent.
In Africa both Tiffindell ski area in south Africa and Afriski in Lesotho have opened, with low temperatures well below freezing for snowmaking and some natural snow from a big storm in South Africa.
In South America after four areas in Chile opened early at the end of May there's been some more fresh snow. Las Lenas in Argentina opens this weekend on June 10th.
In Australia and New Zealand most of the leading areas that have not opened early will do so this weekend. Mt Hutt in NZ was first to do so, earlier today.
In the Northern Hemisphere glacier ski areas are due to open this weekend at Whistler Blackcomb in Canada and at Val d'Isere in France. They join about a dozen areas on both sides of the Atlantic that are still operating from autumn 2016 – either due to having glaciers in Europe or due to huge snowfalls during the winter in North America.
