Les 3 Vallées Reports 444km Of Slopes Open

The world's largest ski area, Les 3 Vallées which encompasses the skiing around and above Val Thorens, Les Menuires, Méribel and Courchevel in France reports it now has more than 400km – 2/3 of its maximum potential terrain, open. The terrain is made up of more than 250 of the region's nearly 350 ski runs. As of Friday the region was posting 444km of slopes open, just under 75% of its maximum area.

Automated iPhone SOS Calls Swamp Ski Town Emergency Services

The Colorado Sun newspaper is reporting that the state's Summit County 911 Center is being swamped by automated calls from iPhones which report their owner has been in an accident, when they haven't.

The new iPhone 14 and Watch 8 series automatically calls emergency services if they are moving at speed then stop abruptly, indicating a car crash may have occurred. However it appears skiers stopping suddenly on the slopes cause the system to call emergency services.

Ski Areas in the Alps Open More Terrain Despite Mild Temperatures

Most of Europe's larger destination resorts are managing to open more groomed terrain for the Christmas and New Year holidays despite challenging weather conditions in the Alps.[/b]

The world's largest ski area, the 3 Valleys in France, reports more than 250 of its nearly 350 runs open for Christmas week. Other big areas are reporting they have 70-90% of their terrain open. They also report good conditions on groomed pistes, particularly above 2,000m, if not so much off.

Snow Oman Opening

Snow Oman in the new Mall of Oman is due to open on December 24th, bringing snow to the Arabian sultanate for the first time.

The facility has been developed by the Majid Al Futtaim group, famous for Ski Dubai and more recently Ski Egypt, but as the name change implies, the Oman facility will be about snow, not skiing.

North American Ski Resorts Close Ahead of “Weather Bomb”

Ski areas across the Midwest of the US have announced they're closing, in most cases through to the Christmas weekend, ahead of "Winter Storm Elliot" which is currently crossing the continent from west to east.

Temperatures as low as -57C are possible by the end of the week in some locations according to The National Weather Service (NWS) with -50F (-45C) a more common low. Temperatures have already reached the -20s in the Rockies leading to hundreds of flight cancellations.

Massive Sinkhole Dubbed ‘Gate to Hell’ Appears Near Siberian Ski Resort

A huge sinkhole is reported to have appeared next to the Russian ski resort of Sheregesh.

The 30 metre wide smoking sinkhole, dubbed "the Gate to Hell" by locals, led to four homes being evacuated, but no reported injuries.

The sinkhole is being linked to a coal mine which stretches 30 miles underground beneath the ski area, and reported to be owned by a company owned by oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Very Cold Weather Hits Western Canada

Very low temperatures, in the minus 30s Celsius, are forecast for Western Canada over the next few days, leading ski resorts in the region to limit operations.

Very cold temperatures for a few days are not unusual in the region at this point of mid-winter, it's also fairly common for temperature inversions to bring warmer weather to mountain tops and keep valleys colder.

Goggia Wins St Moritz Downhill 24 Hours After Hand Broken in Two Places

Italy's Sofia Goggia overcame a broken hand and emergency surgery less than 24 hours before to record her 20th career World Cup win in St Moritz on Saturday.

In the women's downhill race at St. Moritz on Friday, Goggia came second 0.29s behind compatriot Elena Curtoni but hit a gate so hard on her descent, fractured her hand in two places.

Much Needed Snowfall For East Coast North American Ski Slopes

The long awaited cold temperatures and snowfall have arrived in New England and much of the rest of North-eastern North America.

The region has been suffering from warm and wet, or dry, weather which has left ski slopes brown and made snowmaking challenging.

Les Gets First Ski Area in Europe to Ban Smoking on its Slopes

Starting this winter, from tomorrow, December 17th, the ski area of the Les Gets resort will be tobacco-free, believed to be a first in Europe.

In real terms, this means that smoking will be prohibited in the entire communal ski area, both on the ski lifts and on the slopes. Five smoking areas will be set up for those who still wish to take a "cigarette break".

Australia’s Snow in Summer Event Loses Novelty as it Keeps Snowing

A popular December event at Mt Buller ski area in Australia has lost its novelty a little as snow keeps falling on the country's ski slopes, naturally.

The Australian 2022 ski season ended in early October as springtime got underway, but in the intervening two months, as summertime neared, then arrived, Australian ski centres kept receiving repeat snowfalls, the latest in the past few days.

The Reapply Rule

The Melanoma Fund is advising skiers and snowboarders to improve their sun protection habits, to avoid the risk of sun damage and skin cancer.

They recommend apply a broad-spectrum SPF30+ water resistant sunscreen product, paying special attention to all exposed skin and that you reapply it every two hours (or each time you take a break) to ensure full protection.

Super Storm Takes World’s Deepest Snowpack Through 3m Mark

The latest major storm to hit western North America has taken the deepest reported snowpack in the world through the 3 metres (10 feet) mark.

Mammoth Mountain now reports 343cm (11.5 feet) of snow at the top of its slopes. Three other resorts on America's West Coast are past 2 metres, Mt Baker in Washington State (which holds the world record for the most ever snowfall in a season) on 231cm, Northstar at Tahoe on 226cm and Mt Hood Meadows in Oregon on 203cm.

Scotland's Ski Season Starting Monday

Scotland's Glenshee ski area has announced it will open some runs from Monday, 11th December, following snowfall at the resort.

"We will need to move the snow around a bit to get some of the runs into condition but at the moment we aim to open our Plastic, Dink Dink and Rope tows tomorrow morning from 9.30am," the resort posted on its social media on Sunday afternoon, reporting temperatures of -7C, and adding, "With the forecast of continued minus temperatures and the chance of a bit more snow during the week we hope we can get a bit more open in the coming days and we will update this as things develop."

Fresh Snow in the Alps

Ski resorts across the Alps have been reporting fresh snowfall over the past 24 hours, with some measuring as much as 65cm (two feet, two inches) of new snow on higher slopes.

The Western Alps appear to have had the most so far although snowfall has been reported right across central Europe.

Western US Resorts Stress Safety As Snow Keeps Falling By the Foot

Ski areas in the Western US as well as Canada have been hit by a rapid series of storms, with four reported in the past week and another two, at least, lining up for the weekend.

Steamboat in Colorado has already reported 100" (2.5 metres) of snowfall this season and 7-day snowfall totals for some Californian ski areas has reached five feet (1.5 metres) with more on the way.

ABTA Estimates 1.7 Million Brits Heading to The Slopes this Year

British travel trade body ABTA has estimated that approximately 1.7 million Brits will head to the slopes this winter, many for the first time in three years.

The calculation was made on the basis of ABTA's Holiday Habits consumer research, conducted in the last two weeks of August 2022 by The Nursery Research and Planning with a nationally representative sample of 2,000 consumers. Of these 6% said they were planning to take or had already booked a skiing/snowboarding holiday. Based on the ONS 2020 GB population estimate of 67,000,000 this leads to an estimated 1,688,400 people potentially going on holiday skiing or boarding.

Avalanche Danger Warnings As Huge Storms Hit US West

A series of major storms have slammed into America's Pacific Coast bringing reports of up to two feet (60cm) of fresh snowfall.

The storm also brought wind gusts over 100 mph at times and led to temporary closures of ski slopes as well as road access issues, both of which led to long delays for skiers trying to get on the snow.

Dolomiti Superski Posts Most Open Terrain in World at Present

After limited openings a week ago, this weekend sees the official opening of lifts and slopes in most of the Dolomiti Superski's ski resorts.

In total, there are more than 200 lifts operating and around 400km of slopes accessible in 13 out of 15 Dolomiti ski resorts.

Youngsters Win In Spectacular Coordinated Dry Slope Backflip

Olympic snowboarder Jamie Nicholls and Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton CBE were present to judge the 'Best Trick' prize at Warmwell's dry slope as young contestants performed adrenaline-pumping tricks in support of the charity #Willdoes.

Deja Parker and Max Baxter-Fox were judged the winners at the annual Snowboard and Ski Jam, receiving a £200 voucher, donated by Thrudark clothing, for their breath-taking back flip, performed in perfect unison.

Apple's Watch Ultra has a new feature for skiers and boarders with the new app Slopes.

Once installed, the watch is able to track your skiing or snowboarding on the mountain and if you don't know where you are, it can tell you that too.

110km Of Slopes Open Above Cervinia & Zermatt From This Weekend

110km of slopes will be open in the 'Matterhorn Ski Paradise' that straddles the border between Cervinia in Italy and Zermatt in Switzerland, from this weekend, 3rd-4th December. That's more than double what's currently open there and will be one of the largest areas open in Europe so far this season.
