It's the latest in a long list of dry ski slopes in the British nations to be faced with closure. The large centre at Bracknell has gone, although two threatened slopes, Exeter and Gosling Sports Park in Welwyn Garden City, appear to have been reprieved for now.

Cairngorm Funicular Re-opens After 4 Years

Published : 26-Jan-2023 09:04

The funicular railway that provides access to much of Cairngorm ski area above Aviemore in Scotland has re-opened after a four years and four months closure.

The lift was closed after structural problems were identified in the concrete supports for its track. Initial estimates of about £10m to repair the lift grew to approximately £16m when more detailed tenders were received. That cost though was suggested to be a little lower than what it would cost to remove the railway altogether, due to the sensitive ecological environment where it's located. However the final repair cost appear to be closer to £25m.

The deepest snow reported on European ski slopes has reached the three metres (10 feet) mark on the Pic Blanc slopes above Alpe d'Huez. The resort is pictured above on Monday morning, 16th January.

Snow Depths Improve At Resorts That Had Little Terrain Open

Published : 11-Jan-2023 09:16

Snow depths are up (in many cases from zero on lower slopes) at ski resorts that have had limited terrain open in recent weeks due to the warm weather and lack of early season snowfall in the Alps.

A change in the weather since the weekend has seen heavy snowfall for many areas since Sunday, but the big accumulations of 60cm+ reported at some areas are on higher slopes, which in most cases had average snow cover already. It's the lower slopes where the snow is needed.

“Actually, It’s Not THAT Bad” Say Major Ski Resorts in the Alps

Published : 04-Jan-2023 07:47

Ski resorts with higher altitude terrain, which include most of the large resorts that British skiers head to, have been aiming to counter a wave of media headlines implying that all ski areas are closed.

Conditions are certainly being badly impacted on lower altitude ski slopes and some regions like the Balkans have almost no snow, but meteorological agencies in Alpine countries have reported seasonal snowfall figures above 2,200m are actually matching the average for this early point in the season.
