Austria Tourism launches new ‘First Tracks’ programme to get Scottish children skiing

Published : 08-Jan-2026 07:00

Snowsport Scotland has partnered with Austria Tourism to launch an innovative new schools initiative called First Tracks, designed to give young children across Scotland their first taste of snowsports.

The project aims to offer fully subsidised introductory skiing and snowboarding lessons to up to 150 primary school pupils at artificial snow centres throughout the country.

The organisers hope the project will spark a lifelong passion for snowsports among Scotland's youth.

Accessible Learning on the Snow
'First Tracks' will work directly with primary schools, giving children the opportunity to explore the sports in a fun and supportive environment. The programme started in December 2025.

Iain Ramsay-Clapham, CEO of Snowsport Scotland:

"Giving primary school children the chance to try skiing or snowboarding right here in Scotland is vital. With the support of Austria Tourism, we can make that dream a reality and help inspire the next generation of snowsports enthusiasts."

Austria Connection

Austria Tourism's involvement brings an additional cultural dimension to the project, with plans to introduce pupils to aspects of Austrian lifestyle, music and cuisine as part of the learning experience.

Martina Jamnig of Austria Tourism said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to nurturing future talent in the sport:

"We are investing in the future of snowsports and welcoming young Scots to learn about Austria as a destination. We can't wait to see them progress from the artificial slopes of Scotland to the Alps."
