Mont Tremblant Claims Record Snowfall Season

Although the East Coast of North America has not reported the snowy excesses that the west has seen, Eastern Canada's largest ski area, Mont Tremblant, is reporting that it has broken its all-time snowfall record and is extending its season as a result.

Alpe d’Huez to stage GIANT giant slalom

This Saturday, Alpe d'Huez will stage a giant GS on the famous Sarenne black run.

Competitors will take on a mighty 300 gates over a six kilometre course, starting from the Pic Blanc at 3300m.

This test of endurance and racing skills will finish at 1800m at the Pont de Sarenne, after a vertical drop of more than 1500m.

World’s Deepest Snowpack Passes 8 Metres

The deepest snowpack in the world, reported at Mammoth Mountain in California, has gone through the 8 metres (27 feet) mark on the resort's highest slopes. It's the deepest reported anywhere in the world for several years.

Mammoth, along with another Californian ski area The Palisades, which has a 5m+ base, has already said it will be staying at least to July.

Scandinavia’s Largest Ski Area Operator Reports Record Business Despite Challenges

SkiStar, which runs several of the largest ski areas in Norway and Sweden, has reported record business once again, after doing the same last year.

Profit before tax for the second quarter improved by SEK 6 million (1 percent) to SEK 926 (920) million compared with the same period of the previous year.

Up To 45cm (18”) Of Snowfall in 24 Hours in the Alps

The Alps are enjoying one of their coldest and snowiest few days of March, bringing a period of warm, sunny weather to a temporary end.

Temperatures dipped below freezing down to valley floors to start this week and up to 45cm (18") of snowfall has been reported so far, the biggest accumulations in the western Alps, particularly France, and on higher slopes above 2000m.

Europe’s Deepest Snow Depth Finally Reaches 4 Metres

Conditions have turned colder and snowier for the final few days of March, particularly on higher slopes, which should be good news for the Easter holiday fortnight coming up in the first half of April.

Several weeks of predominantly warm, dry and sunny weather which has led to an ongoing meltdown of snow cover in the Alps, particularly at lower lying centres, is ending as a front brings cold and moisture laden air in from the northwest, initial reaching France and western Switzerland and Italy but now moving east right across the Alps.

State of Avalanche Emergency Declared in Utah Ski Valley

It has been one of the snowiest winters on record in Utah, which has the state motto, "The greatest snow on earth".

However the snowfall can sometimes be so great that the avalanche danger suddenly becomes very high and a state of emergency known as "Interlodge" is declared in the Little Cottonwood Canyon, location of Alta and Snowbird ski resorts.

More New lifts for 23-24 in Steamboat’s Huge Upgrade

Steamboat ski area in Colorado's massive 'Full steam Ahead' programme which is seeing $200m invested over several years on a full base upgrade is set to see more now lifts opening next winter.

The upgrades will lead to Steamboat expanding to become Colorado's second biggest ski area and see its uplift capacity from its base almost double.

Will US Be Skiing on the 4th of July 2023?

With the snowpack in the Sierra Mountains on the US West Coast running at double the seasonal average and a number of western US resorts already having surpassed their all-time snowfall records speculation is mountain that some will extend their ski seasons into June and that it may also be possible to ski on US Independence Day again on 4th July.

New Super-Steep Tunnel-Accessed Black Run Opens

A new ski descent at the Glacier 3000 ski area above les Diablerets and close to Gstaad in Switzerland is reported to have finally opened.

Accessed via a newly cut tunnel about 200 metres long through the mountainside, the slope, christened 'Black Wall', immediately plummets with a gradient of around 40 degrees once skiers and boarders emerge at the tunnel entrance. There is no way back once you ski through the tunnel, other than down the slope."

Utah Resort Sets Own New All Time Snowfall Record

[b]With ski areas in the western USA, particularly California and Utah, posting huge snowfall totals this winter, it's perhaps no surprise that all-time records are starting to be broken.

Deer Valley in Utah has now officially surpassed its previous all-time seasonal snowfall record and is celebrating by extending their ski season by an extra week.

Norwegian Currency Down More Than British Pound

Norwegian tourism bodies are highlighting the fact that the country's currency, the Norwegian kroner (NOK) is "historically weak."

"This means that travelling in Norway has become far more affordable for most visitors," a statement from Visit Norway explains.

Vail Begin Switch Of Lift Passes to Phones

Vail Resorts, which operates more than 40 ski areas in Australia, Canada, Switzerland and the US, has announced it will launch its new My Epic App this Autumn ahead of the 2023/2024 season.

The app will contain guests Mobile Pass and Mobile Lift Ticket as well as a host of other features. The move is in line with the group's 'Commitment to Zero' sustainability ambition with the objective of reducing waste created by lift passes on plastic cards with RFID chips over time.

Two New 6 Seat Chairlifts for Kitzbühel Next Winter

Kitzbühel has announced that it will upgrade two old lifts to high-speed detachable 6 seat chairlifts in time for next winter.

The lifts will use manufacturer Leitner's EcoDrive technology, feature heated seating, have some solar power generation thanks to photovoltaic panels on lift buildings and be able to be controlled remotely by staff via cameras and remote controls.

More Snowfall in the Alps

Snow is falling again today across much of the Alps.

The fresh snowfall follows some very warm temperatures on Monday, with many areas seeing afternoon temperatures of lower slopes getting in to the teens.

The warm weather in turn followed the heaviest snowfalls all season over the weekend in the western and northern Alps.

Up To 1.5m (5 Feet) Of Snowfall in the Alps

[b]Base depths on high slopes in the Western Alps have seen their biggest jumps of the season, many adding about a third to their snowpack volumes in 48 hours over the weekend.

Up to 1.5m (five feet) of snowfall was reported above 3,000m altitude. It's good timing for the centres that have had a major springtime snow boost for the final weeks and months of the season.

Mikaela Shiffrin Takes all Time Wins Record

Ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin has equalled the tally for the most Alpine Skiing World Cup race wins, taking her 86th victory where she took her first, aged 17, eleven yerears ago, at Åre in Sweden. Shiffrin, who turns 28 on Monday, won the GS race by 0.64 seconds.

Deepest Bases Back Over 3m As Up to 60cm of Snowfall So Far in the Alps

Avoriaz and Tignes are posting the snow lying 3m (10 feet) deep on the highest slopes this morning, the deepest reported in two months.

The increased snow depth follows the first part of a major storm, which has seen resorts report up to 60cm (2 feet) of fresh snowfall in the past 48 hours, with much more to follow over the weekend.

Heavy Spring Snowfall Starts in the Alps

What may turn out to be the biggest snowfall of the season so far is underway in the Alps.

Recent weeks has seen rapid changes in forecasts up to just hours before the forecast weather is due to arrive, but after several false dawns, snow is already falling and it doers appear this time we may be getting the big falls forecast over the next 72 hours.

Western US Resorts Extend Season With Near Record Snow Totals

While much of Europe and indeed a chunk of the US East has suffered above average temperatures and below average snowfalls this winter, large parts of Western North America has seen some incredible snowfalls, and they just keep coming.

After seven day totals of up to 14 feet reported last week, ski areas in California have posted another 3-4 feet (90-120cm) to start this week. Along with the snow there have been gale force winds at times, and the combination of snow volume, low visibility and violent winds led to many areas closing for periods.

Matterhorn will no longer feature on Toblerone packaging

[b]The iconic Matterhorn mountain, located in Zermatt, Switzerland, is due to be removed from the packaging of the famous Toblerone bars.

The decision is being forced on Mondelez, the owners of the brand, as production is moving from Switzerland to Bratislava in Slovakia. Swiss laws say that under the 'Swissness Act' national symbols can only be used on products that are Swiss-made.

Banff Resort Claims First in Canada to be 100% Renewable Energy Powered

[b]Mount Norquay ski areas near Banff says it has become the first ski resort in Canada to be powered entirely by 100% renewable power.

The ski centre has partnered with Bullfrog Power which it describes as "Canada's leading green energy provider" to receive energy generated from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power from new, Canadian renewable energy facilities.

Covid Epicentre Wuhan Opens Indoor Snow Centre as Part of World’s New Largest Mall

A large indoor snow centre has opened as part of a huge new mall in Wuhan, Hubei Province, Central China. Dubbed "the first urban centre indoor ski resort in central China" the 'Wushangmeng Era Hot Snow Miracle' is a four-season ice and snow era located on the 8th floor of the mall which, although its ground footprint is 102,500 square meters, has a total floor area of 800,000 square metres of development space thanks to its multi-storey nature.

World’s Deepest Snowpack Passes 7m Mark

The latest super storm to hit North America's Pacific Coast in a winter that has seen regular huge storms over the past three months is probably the biggest one yet.

Resorts along the coast have reported massive accumulations with many sating they've had over 100 inches (2.5 metres) of snowfall in the last seven days. The Palisades reported 146 inches or 3.7 metres taking its total seasonal accumulation to a new record total to the end of February for the past 53 years.
