Killington to Open on June 1st

Killington, the last ski area still open in Eastern North America, has announced it will open on Thursday, June 1st, which may be the last day of its long 22-23 season.

The Vermont ski area, the largest in the Eastern US, piles snow high on its Superstar trail through the season so that the run can stay open late into spring as all the snow melts away around it.

Snow in Abu Dhabi For The First Time

A very long planned indoor snow centre will open in Abu Dhabi next month, believed to be the first time snow will have piled up on the ground in the Arab Emirate.

Snow Abu Dhabi, construction work on which began in 2017 after the complex had first been announced many years before, will finally open next week. The surrounding Reem Mall has had a number of different developers over the years but is now operated by the Majid Al Futtaim Group who already run Ski Dubai, Ski Egypt and the most recently opened Snow Oman. They've they've worked with the LA-based American group, Thinkwell, who are responsible for theme park and attraction design around the world, including Harry Potter themed projects in Florida and London, on the snow and ice attractions of the new centre.

First New Tram (Cable Car) in US For 15 Years Opening Next Winter

The first new mountain tram (cable car) to open in North America for 15 years will debut in Montana next winter.

Work to replace Big Sky's Lone Peak tram began last year and has recommenced now that the ski season is over. The original tram, which opened in 1995, opened up one of the biggest lift-served verticals in North America.

Vermont's Killington Resort, the only ski area still open for skiing in the Eastern US, is offering a free "commemorative t-shirt" to any holding one of their season passes who manages to ski or snowboard, go biking and play golf in a single day this weekend.

More Pre-Season Snowfalls in Australia

It's a fortnight to the start of Australia's 2023 ski season, and ski areas have reported another good pre-season snowfall in the past few days.

"We woke up to a beautiful sight today at Perisher of 15cm of snow and with just over two weeks away until opening weekend on June 10, we cannot wait to welcome guests back for the season," confirmed Maddi Ventura, Marketing Manager at the country's largest resort, Perisher, in New South Wales.

A Dozen US Ski Areas Open For Memorial Day Weekend

11 ski areas are open across the USA for the upcoming holiday weekend, including Memorial Day on Monday.

Three areas will be open in California with Mammoth Mountain (pictured above this week) and The Palisades joined by Dodge Ridge which is re-opening especially for the Memorial Day weekend.

New Swindon Council Seeks To Discover What’s Happening With Snoasis Indoor Snow Centre

A new administration covering Swindon is reported to be seeking to find out what is happening with the long-planned indoor snow centre for the town.

First announced in 2011 and gaining planning permission in 2015, the Snoasis indoor snow centre, then backed by a company named Moirai Capital Investment Ltd, appeared to be progressing prior to the Brexit vote, which it blamed for an £80m hole in its £270m plans when initial delays were announced in 2017.

International Skiers Returns to Afghanistan

A group of international skiers returned to Afghanistan in March, tour operator Untamed Borders has reported. Now under Taliban rule, the two main differences to the company's previous visits, were that no women were allowed to ski and none of the airlines still operating into the country would carry skis.

Major Pre-Season Snow For Argentina’s Las Leñas

Argentina's Las Leñas ski area has reported a huge pre-season snowfall, giving a big boost three weeks before the 2023 season is due to begin there.

"What a way to kick off the week. Our local friends are reporting deep new snow in the valley. How much? 30 inches (80cm) at the base and 55 inches (140cm) at the top. More is expected tonight and tomorrow," David of South American ski specialists PowderQuest said.

Riksgränsen to Re-open For Midsummer Skiing

Sweden's Riksgränsen ski area, one of the world's most northerly, has announced it will re-open its ski slopes for skiing over the Midsummer period in late June.

The late June re-opening has been missed several times in recent years due to the pandemic or a lack of adequate snow cover remaining. Currently it reports the snow lying 88cm (three feet) deep up top.

Bozel to Courchevel 1550 gondola moves closer

[b]It's a project that has been under discussion for more than thirty years, but it looks like the proposed Bozel to Courchevel 1550 gondola is closer to becoming a reality.

The local communes have joined the Savoie department to create a licensing body and a call for tenders was launched to find an operator to take on the responsibility for building and operating the lift.

Utah Ski Resort Will Open into June & Hopefully July

Utah's Snowbird ski area says it will offer skiing and snowboarding in June and has not yet announced an end to its 22-23 season.

The ski area, which has reported over 800" of snowfall through the season and still has snow lying 10 feet/3m deep, says it will open this weekend and next, then close for a fortnight before re-opening 17-18th June.

North American Summer Ski Season Starts

The US summer ski area above Timberline in Oregon, not quite a glacier but designated a permanent snowfield, has opened for 2023, served by the resort's Palmer chairlift. Other parts of the ski area remain open with an 11 foot snow depth, there are also four terrain parks currently available.

Palisades Plan Skiing “Freedom Fest” on US Independence Day

California's Palisades ski area has announced a four day ski and snowboard Freedom Fest from July 1-4th, culminating on US Independence Day. It's believed to be the first time in 12 years the ski area has planned to open in July.

Long known as "America's spring skiing capital", The Palisades is one of three US ski areas expected to be open into July thanks to the huge snowpack that built up through numerous winter storms. It's still lying more than 12 feet deep.

Snowy Cold Weather in Australia Ahead of Season Start

With the official start of Australia's 2023 season just over three weeks away, ski areas are celebrating a return to cold temperatures.

Many fired up snowmaking guns again, including Selwyn ski area which is due to re-open this season for the first time since 2019 as the resort's buildings and lifts were destroyed by bushfires in early 2020, but were rebuilt through the pandemic.

Canada Gears Up For Final Weekend of 22-23 Season

[b]Canada'a ski season ends after the coming weekend with the three ski areas still open in Alberta, BC and Quebec all due to close.

Whistler Blackcomb (below) has been battling to make it to their planned season end date reporting very warm weather reaching +30C down at the base and warning that the heat is causing instability to the remaining snow and that slopes might need to close at short notice due to avalanche danger as a result. There's also only intermediate – advanced level terrain left open.

Mid-May Pow-Day in USA

A late-spring storm brought snowfall to high slopes in Colorado on Friday, 12th May.

Arapahoe Basin, one of the world's highest ski areas (and planning to stay open into June), reported over a foot (13") of fresh snowfall in 24 hours.

For Breckenridge (pictured yesterday), open to the end of May, there was 5" of fresh snowfall reported.

Southern Hemisphere’s 2023 Season Starts Early After Heavy Snowfall in NZ

[b]New Zealand's small Manganui Ski Area has opened the 2023 ski season early after heavy snowfall across the country's ski slopes.

The club operated ski field is believed to be the first in the southern hemisphere to open for the 2023 season, more than a month ahead of its expected opening date.

More Big May Snowfalls on Alpine Glaciers

There have been more significant snowfalls on high slopes in the Alps, continuing two months now of predominantly snowy, wintery weather after a fairly dry and sunny winter itself.

Most ski areas have now closed for the 22-23 season in the Alps of course, but Austria has five centres open and Hintertux has reported 50cm (20") of fresh snowfall this morning.

Two New Lifts For Copper Mountain

Copper Mountain has announced it will be upgrading two of its key lifts, but not until winter 24-25.

The Colorado resort ended its 22-23 season on Sunday, but kept spirits up by announcing what it described as its largest investment plan in over a decade ahead of next winter.

More Snowfall in Australia as Season Ends in France, Finland and Italy

Ski areas in Australia have been reporting their second wave of pre-season snowfall in the last week, with heavier falls, up to 20cm (8") so far, reported overnight. Temperatures have also been cold enough for ski centres to fire up snowmaking systems.

Perisher’s Famous Ski Train Gets A Makeover

Australia's largest resort Perisher's historic 'Skitube' alpine railway train has been given a new lease of life thanks to artist Mike Shankster's new large-scale mural covering of four train carriages, created with help from Ukrainian artist Arina Apostolova.

26 US Ski Areas Still Open For May Skiing in 11 States

Colorado has the most ski areas still open in the US as we start May with six centres still operating their lifts and runs into May to choose from.

Copper Mountain and Loveland will close this weekend on May 7 with Purgatory open two more weekends to the 14th when Winter Park also plans to close. Breckenridge has not announced a closing date yet, other than probably in May, and Arapahoe basin has so far extended its season to June 4th.

Pre-Season Snowfall & 100kph Winds In Australia

Ski areas in Australia have reported fresh snowfall with just over a month to go to the start of the 2023 season.

However ski centres, including Thredbo (pictured above today), reported gales of up to 100kph giving blizzard conditions at times.

Heavy Snowfall to Start May in The Alps

May has begun with heavy snowfall above about 1800m across much of the Alps. About 30 ski areas are still open for winter 22-23, although a chunk of these are due to close at the end of today.

In France, Tignes saw rain to about 2,000m yesterday (April 30th) but increasingly good snow conditions over the 1500 vertical metres of slopes above. May has started with slightly lower temperatures and very heavy snowfall giving white out conditions. The picture above was taken at 7am on May 1st, 2023
