Following the terrible fire that destroyed the iconic cube-shaped Glacier 3000 restaurant last September, the ski centre has announced a rebuild is getting underway, again masterminded by the famous Swiss architect, Mario Botta, now 80 years old.

Scotland Posts 99K Skier Visits in 22-23 Season

The Scotsman newspaper has reported that Scotland's five centres posted a combined 98,989 skier days for the 2022-23 season.
For context, the best season of the 21st century was 2009-10 which saw all areas open consistently through the winter and a total of 374,789 skier days.

Return Zermatt – Cervinia Alpine Crossing Priced at 240 CHF (£211)

A return ticket to travel on the newly completed Alpine Crossing, a series of interconnected gondola and cable car lifts that crosses the Swiss – Italian border between the ski resorts of Zermatt and Cervinia has been put at 240 Swiss Francs, currently £211. A one way ticket for the approximately 90 minute journey is 164 Swiss Francs or £137.

Italian ski resort Cervinia will stage a combined ski and golf competition on July 8 and 9th.
The event, which has now been running each summer for 30 years, is a doubles competition that combines summer skiing (or snowboarding) and golf.

Leading South American Ski Resorts Open For 2023 Season After Snow Storm

Many of the major ski areas in Argentina and Chile are opening this weekend after fresh snowfall.
Ski areas in Patagonia reported some big pre-season snowfalls a month ago in May, but since then there had not been much fresh snow until the past few days and most of the continent's areas had remained closed while those of Australia and New Zealand bean opening over the past fortnight.

Since 1995, thousands of mountain bikers from around the world have enjoyed this unique race, which features a mass start at 3330m above sea level to the finish at Allemont, 2600m further down the mountain.

It's a slow start to the 2023 season in New Zealand due to borderline weather conditions for snow.
The first ski area in the country (and probably the southern hemisphere) to open on 10th June, Mt Hutt, has been forced to close again due to rain and now Treble Cone has decided to delay its planned opening.

Cable Car Replaced After Almost 5 Decades and Over 7 Million Passengers

After 4️8 years of faithful services, the Airelles cable car at Font Romeu Pyrénées 2000 in the French Pyrenees is to be replaced by a new gondola.
The Altiservice company which runs the lifts estimates that the lift has carried 7,360,000 people over the past five decades, since its debut in 1975.

Snow Just Before Summer Closes US Ski Resort

10-30cm of snowfall has been reported on mountains across the north western quarter of North America.
Timberline ski area on Mt Hood in Oregon, one of three ski areas still open for skiing and snowboarding on the continent was closed on Sunday and Monday due to the weather, which also brought low visibility. It reports 4 inches (10cm) of fresh snowfall while announcing.

Fresh Heavy Snowfall on Australian Ski Slopes

Ski areas in Australia are reporting upto 30cm (a foot) of fresh snowfall has fallen on slopes in the past 48 hours and the snow is still falling.
Most of the country's ski areas are now open but with limited terrain after a mild start to June, however most are now talking about expanding what's available.

Tignes Opens For Summer Skiing

Tignes is believed to have opened for its 2023 summer ski season, joining neighbouring Val d'Isere which opened last week for a four-week summer ski season. The two areas have 20km of slopes reported open.
Les 2 Alpes in to the final fortnight of a planned two-month summer ski season to the end of June, is also open giving France three areas currently open compared to one each in Austria (Hintertux), Italy (Passo Stelvio) and Switzerland (Zermatt).

More Australian Ski Areas Open

Two more Austrian ski areas have operated for the 2023 season today, joining Perisher, Mt Buller and Mt Baw Baw which opened some limited terrain last Saturday.
Falls Creek and Mt Hotham also opened last Saturday but without an skiing or boarding possible, but that has now changed after up to 40cm of snowfall this week and a drop in temperatures enabling snowmaking.

Utah Resort Re-Opening is for One Weekend Only

Snowbird ski area it Utah, which re-opens for skiing and snowboarding this Saturday, 17th June, says the slopes will be open for this weekend only.
When the rest ended its 22-23 season on the final Monday of may, it had hoped its re-openings from mid-June would continue through to a 4th of July Independence day celebration weekend.

More New Zealand Ski Areas Opening For Season This Weekend

At least three more ski areas in New Zealand are expected to open for their 2023 seasons this weekend, joining the country's first-to-open, Mt Hutt as it enters its second week of the winter.
Cardrona, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are all currently due to open, initially with limited terrain. Most have a mixture of natural and machine made snow with low temperatures over the last week allowing efficient snowmaking.

Big Snowfalls in Australia May Allow More Areas to Open

Australian ski areas have reported nearly a foot of fresh snowfall in the past 24 hours.
The 2023 ski season started in the country last weekend but only three ski areas managed limited terrain openings after a mild start to June.
It now looks like the country's other ski areas will be opening imminently.

Austria's SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental region, one of the largest in the country and the world, has clocked up two decades of being hydro-electricity powered.
Established in 1977 when the various ski areas it is made up of inter-connected, the region has grown to include 83 modern lifts, 270 km of piste and 80 mountain huts.

Vail to Launch My Epic Gear

Vail Resorts, the world's largest ski resort operator with a global portfolio of 41 resorts, mostly in the US, is reported to be planning to pilot a new gear rental subscription program next season.
My Epic Gear will initially operate at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone resorts for a limited number of pass holders during the 2023/2024 ski season.

Utah Ski Area To Re-open in June

Utah's Snowbird ski area is planning to re-open next weekend, June 17-18, for summer skiing and boarding, "conditions permitting".
The centre, which is usually the last to close in the famous ski state, is usually the last to close in Utah, in May or sometimes June.

The 2023 ski season has gotten underway in Australia, Chile and New Zealand.
It's believed Mt Hutt in New Zealand, pictured above this morning, was the first to open due to the country's geographical location, even though it opened 24 hours later than originally hoped.

Val d’Isère Opening for 4 Week Summer Ski Season

Val d'Isère will open for a four-week summer ski season on its Pissaillas Glacier this Saturday June 10th, aiming to stay open to Friday July 7th.
The Cascade and Montet lifts will be open from 7am to noon daily serving terrain above 3,000m.

Two US Ski Areas Consider A Lift Connection

A rare plan to join two independently-operated US ski areas has emerged.
Smugglers' Notch and Stowe in Vermont are near neighbours as the crow flies and it has long been possible, and fairly easy for experienced skiers with lift tickets for both mountains, to traverse between the two. In the past there have been semi-formal inter-connect agreements, but the lift-link plan is new.

Southern Hemisphere Season Start Imminent, But Where?

Exactly which ski area will open first for the 2023 ski season in the southern hemisphere is still uncertain with days to go to the scheduled start.
New Zealand's Mt Hutt has the actual first named date – this Friday June 9th – but the country had a warm end to May and although a snowstorm hit on Sunday, hopes of metre-plus accumulations from the long term forecast delivered just 10cm of snowfall when it eventually arrived and the forecast for the next few days is dry and not that cold.

Austria’s Supreme Court Decides Austria Not Liable for COVID-19 Pandemic Cases

A legal action against the state of Austria, with interest to people from 45 countries who claim they were infected with COVID 19 at the resort of Ischgl in the early months of 2019, has been rejected by Austria's Supreme Court.
More than 6,000 people had contacted Austrian authorities from around the world saying they thought they had caught the disease while in the country, with about 1,000 of these joining a class action, seeking an average of €100,000 compensation each.

Pakistan’s Second Indoor Snow Centre Opens

A second indoor snow centre has opened in Lahore, Pakistan's second biggest city and the 26th largest in the world.
Winterland is a snow and ice themed centre where attractions include a short snow slide, ice cycling, ice skating, a tubing carousel on ice and a snow swing among other attractions. There's also a zipline and kids non-snow play area.

US resorts extend into June, season approaches for the south.
June is traditionally the month when the southern hemisphere's ski season gets going properly, Europe and North America get their glacier summer ski seasons underway, and there are also up to a dozen 'survivors' that have been open since the previous autumn and are still going after 7 or 8 months keep their lifts turning.

Stelvio Opens for 2023 Season

Italy's Passo Stelvio has opened for its 2023 season.
One of the world's few remaining summer-only ski areas it also has one of the longest seasons of any summer-opening northern hemisphere ski area, aiming to stay open for five months through to 5th November this year.
